I started by stamping the giraffe from the It’s the Thought Level 1 Hostess set on Whisper White card stock using black StazOn. I then colored it with Watercolor Wonder crayons.

To protect the image during all the emboss resisting I had planned,  I created a mask from scrap paper and an Oval Punch. The mask covers all of the card except the area around the giraffe. I then smooshed Versamark over the oval area, applied clear embossing powder and heated it up.

My next step was to apply VersaMark to the Woodgrain stamp,  stamp it on the card, and emboss using clear embossing powder. Before I did this, I should have created another mask using the Scallop Oval Punch, to protect the area around my white oval from the woodgrainy-ness, but I didn’t (see the wood grain in the yellow scallop oval? Ooops.) So…be sure to mask that area too.

I then applied Daffodil Delight ink all over the card using a Stamping Sponge. That left me with a yellow card with a white woodgrain pattern. I then created another mask, this time using the Scallop Oval punch and placed it so it surrounded the white oval. I clear embossed that area, and stamped and embossed the Woodgrain stamp a second time on the card.

After wiping the sweat off my brow from all of that heat embossing, I rubbed Pacific Point ink over the whole card. That created a greenish/blue card with areas of white and yellow wood grain. I then grabbed a paper towel and rubbed the card so that the ink came off of the embossed areas, brightening everything up.

Finally, I stamped the sentiment that goes with the giraffe on Ivory Naturals paper, cut it into a small rectangle and mounted it with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I really love how this card came out and now I want to make a whole set of them using that same stamp set.

Last month I participated in a New Catalog swap that a fellow demonstrator organized for the 2010-2011 Idea Book and Catalog. The swap I made uses a new Level 2 Hostess Set, Longfellows. It is the cutest collection of animals and phrases.

I loved this turtle and his shell reminded me of 70′s decor so I decided to use that as the inspiration for the color scheme:  Early Espresso, Daffodil Delight, Rich Razzleberry, Tangerine Tango, Old Olive and Crumb Cake. I hand cut out each of the spots for the shell (wow that was tedious, but looks great!) as well as the bits of paper for the background. All are glued on using Tombow Multi.

Continuing with my obsession with distressing things, I stamped the sentiment on crumb cake, tore the edges, wrinkled it up on my hand and inked it with Crumb Cake ink.

To focus attention on the turtle, I used an Old Olive 1/4″ Grosgrain Ribbon underneath, and dressed it up with a button I made using the Buttons #5 sizzlet and an Old Olive brad.

The bottom of the paper I punched with the Scallop Trim Border Punch and backed it with Daffodil Delight paper.

I knew that I wanted to use Herbed Expressions for one of my entries, but was struggling for the right idea. Then one day in the powder room it hit me – to recreate the wall paper as a card.

I knew it would have a very natural, earthy feel to it, so I used Naturals Ivory paper. I stamped each image twice and colored using Watercolor Wonder Crayons. I then distressed each piece using Creamy Caramel Classic Ink so that they’d look like aged pieces of paper. I then glued them to the card base, and trimmed the overhanging edges off.

I popped up the sentiment with Stampin’ Dimensionals and put some brads in each corner (the photo makes the brads stand out much more than do in person).

The sentiment wasn’t standing out all that well, so I brought focus to it by wrapping linen thread around the card in a fan-like manner. The thread helps to draw the eye away from the rest of the card and down to the sentiment.

I just adore this card. Boy I miss it. I’m going to have to make a bunch for myself at some point this summer.

The inspiration for the background came while I was at a panel discussion for my full time job. The hotel room where the event was being held had a brocade-like print wallpaper that had light vertical stripes on it. I quickly jotted down the idea and tried it out that night. I first tried it with white and vanilla craft inks, but the look wasn’t quite right. So then I tried the Champagne Mist shimmer paint and it was perfect!

To make the stripes look nice, I used my Hobby Blade to cut a rectangle into a beat-up presentation cover I “rescued” from work. I then positioned it over the cardstock and applied the paint using a sponge dauber.

The landscape was painted on Watercolor paper using Watercolor Wonder Crayons and the Eiffel tower was stamped on Brushed Silver card stock with StazOn.

The window frame was made from Kraft (now Crumb Cake) cardstock that I stamped with the Woodgrain stamp and then colored using Creamy Caramel Classic Ink applied with a Stamping Sponge. I then cut it off and then attached using dimensionals.

The frame with the sentiment is from the Hodgepodge Hardware in Styled Vanilla. For the insert, I stamped the flourish stamp in Chic Boutique in Versamark and then gold embossed. I then stamped the sentiment in Old Olive.

The frame is attached with Old Olive 5/8″ Satin Ribbon that is tied with some Linen Thread that has had Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint applied to it.

I got the color combination of Night of Navy, Pumpkin Pie, and Cherry Cobbler from the new Color Coach, which I totally love. It has individual swatches of each color with suggested color combos on the back of each as well as lots of useful information on color theory.

I’ve become a bit obsessed with distressing lately, and this card uses a lot of it. I used Basic Grey, Cherry Cobbler, and Crumb Cake ink to “age” the card stock. This really gives the card stock a richness of color that brings this card to life. The Cherry Cobbler layer is ripped all around, and the Night of Navy layer is distressed along the edges – this adds texture to the card.  I wrapped the Cherry Cobbler layer with linen thread to add a bit more texture and roughness.

As for the sentiment, “For a” was die cut using the Billboard die, and “#1 Dad” was cut using Timeless Type dies. I completely fell in love with Timeless Type when I was working on my Artisan Award entries. If you are considering alphabet dies, I’d reccommend Timeless Type. It is a nice size for both cards and scrapbooking and comes in a great storage case that has extra room to hold other sizzlets.

The Baby Tees wheel features 5 different onsies hanging from a clothes line and as soon as I saw it I knew that I wanted to hang them from a “real” clothes line.

Around the same time, Shelli Gardner announced that sparkle and bling was the theme of her June challenge. The wheels started turning and this card starting to fall into place in my head. There is a lot of shimmer on this card which is hard to see. In person it positively sparkles. Here are the details:

• The color scheme is Crumb Cake, Marina Mist, Shimmery White, and Certainly Celery. The Crumb Cake and Certainly Celery layers were run through the Big Shot using the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions Folder. The Shimmery White layer is punched using the Scallop Trim Border and Corner punches.
• The onesie is paper pieced – I stamped it on Shimmery White, Marina Mist, Soft Suede, and Daffodil Delight card stock, cut out the parts I needed from each and pieced them together. The onesie is actually two layers. The front layer has the leg holes cut out, the back does not. Both have Marina Mist trim on them. The layers are separated with Dimensionals but I used Tombow Multi to attach the hanger and to join the two layers on the sides. The Daffodil star is also covered with Champagne Mist shimmer paint.
• I made a mini clothes hanger by attaching the the Soft Suede hanger piece to some jewelry wire bent into a hook.
• The clothesline is linen thread that I covered in Champagne Mist shimmer paint. I applied the paint to a sponge dauber, held the thread down with it, and pulled the thread through several times until it had a nice shimmer to it.
• The “Welcome Baby” tag is Crumb Cake card stock with Champagne Mist shimmer paint on it. It looks a lot like Brushed Gold card stock, but with a bit more sparkle. It was cut using the Matchbox Die.
• The yellow rhinestones are from the Fire Circle brads. I pulled the tines apart so I could remove the rhinestones. I then applied them to the card with Tombow Multi.

This card was inspired by a photograph of Liz Lemon’s cupcake pajamas in Entertainment Weekly. I’d originally imagined it as a standard sized card with a bunch of color blocks with a cupcake on each.

But when I mocked that up I was really unimpressed with it. So then I decided to scale down to one cupcake on a 3×3″ card – I wanted to make a confection-y nugget of a card.

The card base is Shimmery White card stock that was run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions Die.

The ribbon is from the Masterpiece Ribbon Originals collection. It is actually two pieces – one long one, and a second shorter one that was folded to make loops. I sewed the two ribbons together to make sure they would stay together.

The next layer is a Love Notes Kisses (from the Occasions Mini) that I dyed using a Pretty In Pink Reinker. On a plate I mixed reinker with water and then let the paper soak in the mixture until it had soaked up the color. It took several tries to get the color I wanted, and unfortunately I didn’t keep track of the ratio of reinker to water! After it dried, I paper pierced around the edges to add some extra detail. It is popped up with two layers of Stampin’ Dimensionals to give the ribbon enough room underneath.

The last layer is the little glittery cupcake. I stamped the cupcake in Black StazOn and then colored with Stampin’ Write Markers. I then heat embossed the cupcake with a combination of clear embossing powder and Dazzling Diamonds. I then cut it out and covered it with Crystal Effects to make it extra shiny and button-like. It was popped up with a Stampin’ Dimensional.

I really love this card because of the bright colors – Apricot Appeal and Melon Mambo, and the black gingham ribbon adds a sweet and edgy touch to the card.

The weaving isn’t as difficult as it looks – the trick is to get it set up correctly at the beginning. Here is what I did:

• Position a 4 1/2” x 5 1/2” piece of Melon Mambo with the long edge at the top. Use Dotto to keep paper in place.
• Using a ruler, draw a line parallel to the top of the card, 1/4” from the edge. Repeat from the bottom. These two lines will tell you where to start and stop cutting in the next step.
• Starting 1/2” from the left, use the Hobby Blade to cut a line from the top to the bottom line, using the ruler to guide you.
• Repeat every 1/4” until you are 1/2” from the right side of the card. Now you have a “loom” in which to weave.
• Cut eleven (11) 1/4” x 4” strips of Apricot Appeal. Weave these in and out of the “loom” created in the Melon Mambo card stock. Continue until you can’t fit any more strips. No need for adhesive; they will hold tight in the “loom”. You may need to push up the strips as you work.
